3 Reasons you should give up on white glossy woodwork

Hands up if you’ve decided to pick up the paintbrush and redecorate your house/room and then when it comes to the finishing touches, reach for the old faithful Brilliant White to add that classic glossy sheen to your doors and skirting. If your hand is up, I see you. I’ve done it too.

Whilst white glossy skirting boards and doors can create a classic clean and crisp finish, changing it up and venturing into alternative options can elevate your design from basic to interior-designer-level-100. Not only that, but it can also create amazing optical illusions with your home's architecture. Below are my top 3 reasons that stepping away from the white could be your best design decision yet.

  1. The optical Illusion

Using one colour over the walls and woodwork can make a space feel bigger by creating less visual disruption with different colour breaks. It’s also a great tip for disguising any ugly doors or rooms that have multiple entrances by blending them in with the walls.

Painting the skirting the same colour as the wall can make them look taller and create height in rooms with lower ceilings. On the flip side, you can also paint your skirting a darker colour than the walls to help ground them and bring the eyes downward away from any tall ceilings if you want a cosier feel.

2. Get Creative

Painting your skirting a contrasting colour to the walls can also give a room a real feel of creativity and fun.

Having an alternative colour on the skirting and doors guides your eyes round the whole room and allows visitors to explore all the visual intrigue a room has to offer.

The woodwork in a room can be as much of a style accessory as the cushions you have on your sofa. Using the 60:30:10 rule, they are also a great way of introducing an accent colour to your chosen palette.

3. Make it practical

If, like me, you have a mucky pup running riot around the house you’ll be able to sympathise with how often your white skirting can get coated in mud splatters and dog hair. Painting your skirting a darker colour is a great way of saving on some elbow grease and can hide the daily trials and tribulations your skirting has to endure in a pet or child friendly household.

If you want to jazz things up a bit and go for a vibrant, or lighter colour skirting opt for a wood paint with a higher sheen %, as this will be far easier to wipe down and keep clean.
