5 Ways to Sustainably Introduce 2021 Design Trends Into Your Home
The nature of trends means that there is a constant notion of ‘out with the old and in with the new’, which automatically seems to create conflict against any kind of sustainability. However, wanting to live more sustainably doesn’t mean you need to have a bedroom that hasn’t been touched since 2001 (shout out to all the inflatable furniture of years gone by).
Here we will delve into 5 of the top interior design trends of this year and share ways you can either DIY it or sustainably shop the look.
Japandi
What is it?
Japandi is a hybrid style combining the sleek, clean lines of scandi with the natural materials and elegance of Japanese design. Perfect for those who love neutral tones and a touch of minimalism.
DIY option
Style up your own Japandi furniture by buying some cane webbing to change up your drawers and cabinets. We love what @design_at_nineteen has done with this chest of drawers! Check out their account for how they got the look.
Where to shop the style
If you don’t fancy having a fight with a measuring tape, check out Three Little Pigs. They ethically source products from around the globe, ensuring that the items they sell are made sustainably. With plenty of natural tones, rattan details and monochrome accessories they are an ideal brand to get the Japandi look in your home. You can find them here: Three Little Pigs
Coloured Kitchens
What is it?
The biggest colour trends in our kitchens for 2021 are sage green, pink and dark tones. Can’t choose which one to go for? Why not do some mix and matching like this stunner from @lui_and_me
DIY option
The most sustainable way to change up your kitchen is as simple as a pot of paint. So you can shake up your cabinets (again and again and again and again…). It’s the ideal way to create a contemporary kitchen without the waste. We’d recommend using an Intelligent Satinwood finish paint by Little Greene Paint Company
Where to shop the style
You may already have some grand plans for a brand new kitchen. If you do, check out Sustainable Kitchens. They make quality kitchens using only FSC and PEFC certified timber and provide stunning contemporary finishes.
Biophillic Design
What is it?
Biophilic design is all about connecting with nature through the use of materials, patterns and textures. It is centered around the concept that the natural world has the ability to improve our physical and mental wellbeing helping create calm and relaxation - something we could all use an extra dose of right now!
DIY option
The quickest and easiest way to create a more biophilic home is to add plenty of greenery into different rooms. Maybe you can have a mini herb garden on your kitchen window-sill alongside some big tropical treats in the bathroom.
Where to shop the style
If you want to go the full biophilic hog, then look no further than Nkuku. They work with natural and recycled materials to create their handmade products, many of which are made with natural tones and textures.
Statement Vases
What is it?
Thought vases only existed to hold some wilting flowers? Wrong. Statement vases have taken instagram by storm thanks to the ‘shelfie’,and are all about form AND function.
DIY option
With them becoming a ‘must have’ in any contemporary home, they are not always the cheapest items to source. Fret not, because making your own terracotta-style vases could not be easier. Simply mix together some acrylic paint and baking powder, find some old vases/jars/empty gin bottles (of which I have a great many), and get painting! The best bit is you can paint them in any colour you choose so that they compliment your home perfectly. You can find out more about to get the look here.
Where to shop the style
You can peruse numerous handmade statement vases from small independent businesses on Etsy, including the rather cheeky number above which you can find here.
Textured Furniture
What is it?
2021 is all about getting into the groove with our furniture. Cupboard doors, wardrobe fronts and sideboard faces are adorned in decorative slatting and geometric textures.
DIY option
Head over to @thefemaleDIYcollective to see some stunning examples of IKEA hacks that will show you how to add lumps and bumps in all the right places.
Where to shop the style
Go and have a gander at Swoon who have a great selection of handcrafted sideboard units, bedside tables and desks with funky fronts. They also use sustainable materials where they can, with many of their wooden items being made with sustainable mango wood.
